At the Western International School of Shanghai, we integrate the Approaches to Learning (ATLs) within the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and focus on the transdisciplinary development of Thinking, Social, Self-Management, Research, and Communication skills.
Our pedagogical approaches allow teaching teams to plan naturally to develop all aspects of these, both within daily routines and structured learning engagements. Developing communication skills requires focusing on listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and presenting as children grow and develop.
A vital element of the Career-related Programme is the study of Personal and Professional Skills. Students acquire skills that support learning, life, and work over the two-year course, covering five main subjects: Applied Ethics, Intercultural Understanding, Personal Development, Effective Communication, and Thinking Processes.
Applied Ethics is the application of ethics to real-world problems and attempts to answer the question of how people should act in specific situations. While studying Applied Ethics as part of the Personal and Professional Skills Programme, students will analyze, discuss and debate ethical dilemmas in general life, progressing to dilemmas more specific to the workplace and their career-related studies.
The Western International School of Shanghai offers a robust academic programme as part of the school curriculum. The WISS exclusive university partnerships are among the range of distinguishing programs offered to students. One such partnership is with the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in the United States. SCAD forms part of the WISS IB Career-Related Programme (IBCP) and offers students a plethora of university-level courses based on foundation-level Art and Design.
The selection of courses on offer affords WISS students a flexible pathway to explore their passions in the field and possible career pathways, which include:
Architect, Interior Designer, Game & Software Designer, Photographer, Performing Artist, Advertising & Branding Executive, Artist, Author/Playwright, Digital Design Consultant, Sketch Artist, Sound Designer, Visual Effects Specialist, Industrial Design, Animation, and Sustainability Design.
Can "new knowledge" change established values or beliefs? Attendees of the recent Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Exhibition at the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS) echoed how the concept of knowledge diverges from what is established, giving rise to new knowledge connections to be explored.
For those who may be unfamiliar with IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the course is at the core of the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP). The TOK course is centered around the core theme of “Knowledge and the knower,” encouraging students to reflect on themselves as knowers and thinkers and to consider different communities of knowers to which they belong.
At the Western International School of Shanghai, the International Baccalaureate is in our DNA. WISS is the only school in China that offers all four IB programmes. The WISS education prepares students intellectually and socially to become lifelong learners and global citizens. Although the number of IB graduates continues to grow every day, the maximum score is achieved by less than 0.5% of students worldwide. WISS is proud to contribute to this global achievement that reflects our vision of providing excellence in international education.
Obtaining 45 points in the IB Diploma is an achievement that requires much more than purely academic excellence. Other qualities and skills contribute to the academic success of students. Time management, effective self-expression, the ability to elaborate on theories and hypotheses, and being a critical thinker all support student accomplishment.
The Aeronautics, Engineering, and Aviation Business pathway is a groundbreaking opportunity for students interested in aviation, air traffic control, aeronautical science, engineering, physics, and military and civilian aviation. Aeronautics, the newest IBCP pathway at the Western International School of Shanghai, enables students to engage in career-related learning while still in high school. WISS is exceptionally proud to be the 4th IBCP school worldwide to offer this exciting and competitive partnership with ERAU in Aeronautics.
This exciting pathway gives students an edge on the competition by allowing them to gain practical and applicable skills in a booming field that genuinely interests them. For students in the aeronautics pathway, the sky is the limit, quite literally. The lifelong and applicable skills that students gain through this pathway will enable them to work in aeronautics, with jobs ranging from pilot to flight engineer to defense industry design, amongst many exciting options.
