At the Western International School of Shanghai (WISS), the importance of embracing diverse cultures is deeply ingrained in our educational philosophy. We firmly believe that by celebrating and integrating elements from both Eastern and Western cultures, we create a vibrant and inclusive learning environment for our students. One prime example of this is the various celebrations across campus for the Mid-Autumn Festival, where the school community comes together to honor traditions, engage in cultural activities, and foster cross-cultural connections.

One of the highlights of our Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations in the Early Years at WISS is the lantern-making activity. Students engage in the art of lantern creation, showcasing their creativity and craftsmanship. This hands-on experience not only enables students to understand the significance of lanterns in Chinese culture but also nurtures their artistic talents.

Another delightful activity during the festival is mooncake making. Students and teachers collaborate in making these traditional Chinese pastries, which are associated with family reunion and good fortune. Through this culinary experience, students learn about the importance of traditional foods in different cultures, as well as the significance of sharing meals with loved ones.

To further strengthen the bond between the school and parents, we organize cultural connection workshops during the Mid-Autumn Festival. These informative sessions allow parents to gain insights into various aspects of Eastern and Western cultures, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation. By actively involving parents in these workshops, we create a collaborative environment that enriches the overall learning experience of our students.

By celebrating different cultures, WISS encourages its students, parents, and teachers to develop a global mindset. It broadens their perspectives, enhances their understanding of diversity, and strengthens their ability to engage with people from various cultural backgrounds. Celebrating different cultures fosters empathy, respect, and curiosity, nurturing a sense of unity and harmony within our school community.

What We Can Learn?

Through these multicultural celebrations, students learn firsthand about the values, customs, and traditions of diverse cultures. They develop empathy and tolerance, recognizing that each culture has its unique contributions and strengths. Parents benefit from enhanced cultural awareness, enabling them to support their children's growth in an increasingly interconnected world. Teachers gain valuable insights into incorporating diverse perspectives into their teaching practices, promoting inclusivity and ensuring a well-rounded education for every student.

At WISS, the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival exemplifies our commitment to embracing diverse cultures and fostering a global mindset. Through our efforts, we create opportunities for students to immerse themselves in various cultures, facilitating mutual understanding and appreciation. By celebrating different cultures, WISS cultivates an environment where the best of Eastern and Western cultures come together, facilitating personal growth, intercultural competence, and collective success.
