IMeet Bruno Antunes – Art Teacher at Western International School of Shanghai

You feel ART in every corner when you enter his classroom. It's the classroom of Mr. Bruno Antunes, the WISS Primary Art Teacher. We had the privilege to explore his creative space, where he shared some background, successful approaches to teaching, and how he manages his classroom to inspire creativity. The art space is where originality is palpable, and delicacy is appreciated in every detail that decorates the wall space. It is truly a space that articulates the great works students create within its walls.

Bruno Antunes was born on the beautiful island of Madeira, Portugal. Having grown up between the sea and the mountains. Moved by the breathtaking nature, he nurtured his creativity at an early age. Pursuing the arts, Bruno studied Architecture at the University of Porto in Portugal. As a young architect, Bruno worked on projects that questioned the use of public spaces in historical sites. He collaborated with peers in Sweden and Denmark and partnered with ADEPT Copenhagen on new design ideas for public spaces. His creative and practical approach to using the space awarded Bruno the 3rd prize in the international urban design competition "Oporto Riverfront Ideas 2008".

His connection with education was born from the desire to convey to the youngest how important art is in our lives. Bruno feels privileged to be an educator. Teaching allowed him to become a life-long learner, continually expanding his knowledge and creativity. After completing his Master's Degree in Education of Visual Arts at the University of Aveiro, Bruno took up an assistant position at the Bechyne Arts and Crafts School in the Czech Republic, where he discovered his passion for clay and pottery.

Whenever he can, Bruno travels to one of his favorite places in China, Jingdezhen, where China's ceramic tradition blends with the creativity of new artists. His most recent artistic work resulted from the encounter between East and West. Bruno created Tama Guiku, a tea set inspired by Japan, with which he was a finalist at "The Orient Foundation Art Contest 2021".

Clay pottery has become a passion for Mr. Bruno. He loves to visit our well-equipped Art Studio to use the pottery wheels to create beauty that reflects patience and dedication. These are the same values he aims to cultivate within his students.

"I discovered this art when I studied in the Czech Republic. However, I never thought it would become one of my passions. Sometimes it is about trying and being consistent to discover that you are good at something and that you enjoy doing it" Pottery is an art that requires perseverance and dedication. Practice and effort make you improve every day. I remember that I started creating pots, which is the simplest thing, but now I can create tea sets that receive prizes."

Bruno knew he wanted to become a teacher since he was a child.

"Looking back, I can see that the idea of becoming a teacher took me to my childhood when the art teachers were my heroes. I admired how much they knew about art and that they spent the whole day in the art room surrounded by all those fascinating materials."

One of the aspects he loves most about WISS is how artistic talent amongst our students is celebrated and how they are supported in developing the core WISS Graduate Qualities, Leadership, Collaboration, Resilience, Problem Solving, Global Citizenship, and Digital Literacy on their path to future success. "As an art teacher, it is incredibly gratifying to see how WISS encourages and celebrates the artistic talent of its students and teachers. Here I feel I have space to continue to learn and inspire students. "

For Bruno, WISS productions are the moments that best reflect the artistic expression of our students.

"I am always touched to see the students' raw talent as they take the stage in various productions throughout the year. In these moments, the different arts meet in a moment of authentic expression of the students. I will forever remember the glow and courage of my students on stage, even the ones at the back."

We know that in the art world, there are no rules as artists develop their forms of expression and instincts individually. Still, we asked Mr. Bruno what was the weirdest question a student had even asked him, and his answer is the one that best describes an artist: "In art, there are no weird questions!"
