Meet Justin, WISS Outstanding Achievement Scholarship Recipient

It has always been a pleasure to be part of the WISS community, and I have had a lot of fun over the last few years at WISS. This year, I applied for the outstanding scholarship achievement for 2022-2023. I am in grade 6 and about to be in grade 7. It is my 7th year at WISS, and my journey has been exciting and surprisingly challenging. I’ve met many new friends, and unfortunately, due to the international nature of families, some of them are not part of the WISS community anymore. I work hard at school, but things have been more challenging since the pandemic began.

I have many talents in different areas, such as sports, music, and academics. The instrument I play is the piano. I have played the piano since the age of 4. I performed many times over the past years at WISS. My latest performance was at the “Classical Evening” at WISS, where I performed the “Waltz in A Minor” by Frederic Chopin. I am also a talented swimmer and a skilled badminton player. I started swimming at WISS in the secondary swim team in grade 4 and have set a few records during this time.

What does receiving a WISS scholarship mean to you?

Receiving this outstanding achievement scholarship means a lot to me. First, it helped me see that all my hard work at WISS has successfully assisted me in achieving my goals.

My journey at WISS has been such a wonderful experience. All those field trips and projects were just a blast. This outstanding achievement supports me and motivates me to keep going. Over these seven years, I learned tons of new skills and knowledge and made many new friends. This Scholarship offers me motivation, encouragement, and inspiration to not quit or stop doing what I was doing all these past years. It keeps me going because now that I know my work has value. This Scholarship is the result of my work, and it helps me realize how much I have grown.

I worked on all my assignments with much effort not to fall behind in my work and never missed an assignment deadline.   I participated in the “PSRC” in Kindergarten and Grade 1 and the Action Cubs from grade 2 to grade 5. I hosted the “Empty Plate Day” with my committee and some support from our supervisor Ms. Feng. Receiving this Scholarship also means encouragement for a bright future. This Scholarship is a sign that I should try harder. The Scholarship is also going to help me with my college application. This Scholarship means more than just its monetary value; it means a reward and a bright path leading toward the future.

Can you share your experience of the Scholarship application process?

Applying for the outstanding achievement scholarship wasn’t as easy as it looks. It was challenging since you needed to write down all your achievements. These achievements need to prove your outstanding achievements and accomplishments and your contribution to the WISS Community. I worked hard on each summative and participated in performances and competitions. I also took service actions and hosted events for our community. These events are Classical evenings, Running competitions (3 km run), Swimming competitions, AMC (American Math Competition), etc. Because of these events, I wrote many different achievements for the Application for the Scholarship.

Do you have any advice for those thinking about applying for a WISS scholarship?

For students that want to apply for the Scholarship, my advice is to keep trying to reach your goal. Explain your strengths and share why you are outstanding in the WISS Community. Your achievements are essential in your application. They can support your application and help you receive this Scholarship.

What are your career aspirations?

My career aspiration is to become a professor at a prestigious university. I am passionate about sharing knowledge; it was always my goal is to become a professor at a university.

What’s an accomplishment you’re proud of?

I have many achievements that I am proud of. I have accomplished many things in the past years at WISS, and my most memorable achievement is receiving the Outstanding Achievement Scholarship Award. This is because this achievement is the outcome of everything I’ve done. It is what all my achievements build up to. Having this award is a dream come true for me. I am very proud of this and will always keep up with the work.

Meet Jeonghyeon, WISS IB Full Scholarship Recipient

My name is Jeonghyeon. I am a South Korean student that moved to Shanghai and joined WISS in January of 2021. Before then, I had moved through a wide range of countries, including Switzerland, Singapore, and Japan, to name a few. Even on my first day at WISS, I was pleasantly surprised at the friendly and welcoming atmosphere I received from my peers and teachers. Furthermore, I was awed by and benefited from the experiences that being a WISS student allowed me to have, whether after-school activities, award programs, or simply a different learning environment.

What does receiving a WISS scholarship mean to you?

The primary reason I applied for the WISS scholarship was to practice my writing skills and prepare me when applying for college/job applications and other possible scholarship opportunities. Since I succeeded in receiving a WISS scholarship, my belief in my writing skills has improved, along with my overall self-confidence.

How will the WISS IB full Scholarship help you in your learning journey at WISS?

Receiving the WISS scholarship resulted in a boost in my self-confidence. I have been told many times that I could excel in various areas if I had faith in myself. I also believe this statement to be true, and I hope that my increased confidence will allow me to be more successful as a student and as a person.

How was the process of applying for a WISS scholarship?

The application process itself was intuitive and easy to follow. I am happy that I had the opportunity to apply and prove my abilities to myself and improve my writing skills.

Do you have any advice for those thinking about applying for a WISS scholarship?

I would advise them to consider the qualities that allow them to be eligible for receiving the Scholarship and analyze themselves. They should know that simply achieving high grades or contributions to the school is not enough. The application is just as important as the requirements and should be treated as such.

What are your career aspirations?

I do not have a specific career that I am aiming for. However, my interest in the subjects of Mathematics and technology leads me to believe that being an engineer could be a suitable career path. I still have other unexplored interests, such as astronomy and programming, but because I have not received any formal education in those subjects, I believe that becoming an engineer would be the most realistic career.

What’s an accomplishment you’re proud of?

There is a rather unimpressive accomplishment that I am nevertheless proud of. The fact that I achieved a passing grade in the class Korean Language and Literature is what I am most proud of. This is because even though I am a native Korean whose parents both speak the language, I am not as proficient in all aspects of the Korean language. When doing a rough estimate, I would only be around a Language Acquisition Phase 3 level if there was such a class in the IB. However, only Language and Literature is offered in the IB curriculum. I chose to try joining the Language and Literature Korean class in Grade 10, even though I knew that my GPA would fall because of this decision and that I may even completely fail the class. I also knew that by taking this class, I would have to do the eAssessment for Korean at a Language and Literature level, even though I was not at such a level. To help me try to succeed in the class and on the eAssessment, I chose to undergo a rather intense learning process under my Korean tutor. After countless hours of work over several months, I could gradually see my Korean proficiency improve. Although my poor skills still garnered me a few low grades, I achieved a passing grade and still maintain it. While this still may seem unimpressive to some, this is an accomplishment that I am proud of.

Meet Shaeanna, WISS Outstanding Achievement Scholarship Recipient

I am Shaeanna, and I am a Grade 9 student at WISS. I have lived in Shanghai for 12 years and 3 years in Bangkok, Thailand, although I am originally from Singapore. I have been a student at WISS since I was in grade 5 and have 2 younger sisters and an older brother. I am interested in handicrafts such as knitting, crocheting, baking, and experimenting with recipes. Since I was six and a half, I have been playing piano, and I am looking forward to completing the ABRSM piano exam this year. I am also excited to be going on and completing the silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

What does receiving a WISS scholarship mean to you?

Receiving the WISS Outstanding Achievement Scholarship inspires me to work harder and meet the school’s expectations. It allows me to have a target and encourages me to work toward getting better grades and participating and volunteering for school events and after-school classes.

How will the WISS Outstanding Achievement Scholarship help you in your learning journey at WISS?

The WISS Outstanding Achievement Scholarship allows me to enjoy my achievements and understand my targets for the following year. When filling in the question, I want to maintain the result on my report card or improve it. It also allows me to start joining volunteer services and gives me a reason to take part in the next few years of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

How was the process of applying for a WISS scholarship?

The process of applying for the WISS scholarship was very smooth, and the format and questions were straightforward. Although the answers to the questions are not super easy to answer, with time and thought, they can be answered. Applying is also easy, and choosing which area of the WISS Outstanding Scholarship to select is easy.

Do you have any advice for those thinking about applying for a WISS scholarship?

I would encourage my class and schoolmates to achieve their school and personal expectations. To work hard as well as join groups such as MUN, iShare, and different arts activities, inside and outside of school

I have completed the ABRSM exam grades 2 and 5 and moving on to 8. I have also completed the Duke of Edinburg Bronze Award.

Meet Sean, WISS Outstanding Achievement Scholarship Recipient

My name is Sean, and I am from Grade 8. I am from Canada and China and have been at WISS for 4 years.

What does receiving a WISS scholarship mean to you?

Receiving a WISS scholarship means a lot, and I appreciate all of the students and teachers who have helped me throughout my learning journey. I am grateful for such a fantastic opportunity, and I take this to my heart.

How will the WISS Outstanding Achievement Scholarship help you in your learning journey at WISS?

By receiving this Scholarship, I am more motivated to do my best and become a more active member of the WISS community. I am more prepared and encouraged to learn, and I will definitely work harder to reach my goals.

How was the process of applying for a WISS scholarship?

The process of applying for the WISS scholarship was not too complicated and was an excellent opportunity to practice my writing skills. The task was to answer a few questions about what WISS traits we embodied and show how we have been positive members of our community.

Do you have any advice for those thinking about applying for a WISS scholarship?

As a person of a simple mind, I would only provide two points of advice: Be honest and try your best. Often, the task ahead seems stressful and challenging, but anything can be achieved as long as you give it your all. Also, be yourself, and write from the heart. With these tips in mind, you will be able to reach your goals and your dreams.

What are your career aspirations?

I currently do not have any career aspirations yet, even though I have given this topic great thought. I aspired to be a professional ninja a few years prior, but I gave up on that idea after considering the risk factors involved. After much more consideration, I have decided that becoming an ice cream taster would be a better choice in comparison.

What’s an accomplishment you’re proud of?

I cannot say that I am proud of any one particular accomplishment: I am proud just to have the opportunity to study at WISS and be in such a welcoming community.

Meet Emily, WISS IB Full Scholarship Recipient

I am Emily from grade 10. I am from Korea, and I have been a student at WISS since grade 2. This is my 9th year at WISS. I have a keen interest in science, specifically in the medical field and mathematics.

What does receiving a WISS scholarship mean to you?

Receiving the WISS scholarship means a lot to me and is a significant personal accomplishment. I have not thought about moving schools since I came to WISS, and the scholarship I have received this year is one of the most significant accomplishments I have made here at WISS. During those nine years, I had many challenges and obstacles that I went through regarding academics and general social life, though I also had more extensive and minor achievements. Throughout my academic journey, being awarded a WISS scholarship is an achievement that endorses my hard work and the contribution I made to the school until now. However, this is not the final destination. I will continue to demonstrate my dedication and diligence to the school and show how I develop as a student and improve as an individual.

How will the WISS IB full Scholarship help you in your learning journey at WISS?

The WISS IB full Scholarship will help me in my learning journey for the next two years as I journey through the rigorous IB Diploma Programme. The scholarship is seen as proof to me as a student for helping the community and my positive academic performance; therefore, I will continue to demonstrate these actions over the next two years. The WISS full IB Diploma Programme scholarship also serves as a great motivational tool for me to maintain my academic performance and continue to contribute to and support the school community as part of my learning journey.

Can you share your experience of the Scholarship application process?

The process of applying for the WISS scholarship was considerably thought-provoking for me. Writing about my contributions to the school and the learner profiles that exemplify me made me think back and reflect on my learning journey and the effort and contributions I made as part of the school community. Writing a separate essay about leadership was one of the main aspects that encouraged me to reflect on my past actions and behavior. The process was not very challenging in terms of writing down the information. Still, it was challenging in terms of self-reflection, thinking about what to write, and writing the information in the most concise way possible, making the reading experience for the scholarship committee interesting.

Other than these aspects, the process was quite stimulating as I looked back at my memories and accomplishments, which are something that I did not remember from before. Also, I do not have much time to genuinely reflect on school life. However, through applying for the WISS scholarship, I have reflected on myself frequently and thought about what kind of contributions I can make to the school to support the community and improve on my strengths and weaknesses as a person.

Do you have any advice for those thinking about applying for a WISS scholarship?

Some advice I would give to those thinking about applying for a WISS scholarship would be to aim to make some significant contributions to the school. Although academic grades are essential when applying for a scholarship, making contributions to the school as a member of the community is one of the top priorities, I would say. As school members, making contributions to the school can benefit the school and us as individuals in developing skills. Any extra-curricular activities or community services are also very beneficial, though doing lots of activities within school and making contributions would be more than appropriate. A significant aspect to consider as part of the application is the scholarship essay. My advice would be to write your essay with truth and authenticity without false information. If your facts are conveyed sincerely through the writings, it would be better than any other ones that do not because it will be considered your own unique personal writing.

What are your career aspirations?

My career aspiration is to be involved in a field that benefits society or contributes to improving human lives. In the long term, I want to be able to look back at my whole life and career and be proud of my achievements.

What’s an accomplishment you’re proud of?

An accomplishment that I am proud of is this IB full DP scholarship. This is not only because I received the scholarship, but it is also because I have been acknowledged by the school for my academics and contributions to the school. The full WISS IB Diploma Programme Scholarship considers a variety of aspects, not just academics; therefore, it means a lot to me as I have been acknowledged through my work and commitment by the school, which is almost like a home to me since I have been at this school from a young age. This is one of the most significant accomplishments I have made at school and in my life, though it does not mean I will stop challenging and pushing myself to the limits. It would rather be a motivation and a practical step towards my future goals and achievements. I am very grateful and proud to be part of the WISS community and be an ambassador for the school as a scholarship recipient. The full WISS IB Diploma Programme Scholarship has motivated me, and I will continue being a risk-taker to achieve further goals and accomplishments that I set in my life.

Meet Taeyoon, recipient of the WISS Outstanding Achievement  Scholarship Award

My name is Taeyoon, and I am from South Korea. I am currently a Grade 9 student at WISS, and I have been at WISS for five years. There isn’t a specific hobby or thing I am interested in at the moment, but I do enjoy traveling, swimming, and several sports. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family. I try to enjoy myself at WISS; therefore, I have participated as a member of the WISS swim team and the orchestra for several years. This year, I was also delighted to participate in the AMC 10 mathematics competition and the Duke of Edinburgh program for the Bronze and Silver Awards.

What does receiving a WISS scholarship mean to you?

To me, receiving a WISS scholarship means being awarded for all my hard work and academic achievements that I have attained at WISS and for being an active contributor to the organization. During my time at WISS, I have always tried my best to put all my effort into tasks given out and produce my work to the best of my ability despite the challenges I faced. I have also participated in varying After School Activities and programs at WISS throughout the years. I believe that I am merely being awarded for successful outcomes in my academics and actively contributing to the school programs and services.

The WISS Outstanding Achievement Scholarship will inspire and motivate me to preserve myself to be an earnest student at WISS and be a risk-taker to try new things and participate in other new services and programs.

How was the process of applying for a WISS scholarship?

While applying for a WISS scholarship, I tried to explore more school activities, and I always tried to produce my work to the best of my ability. Participating in school activities was very enjoyable. They were always fun, and I was happy to join them. However, I, of course, had challenges too. Sometimes, it was tough for me to maintain my standards in academics. During these times, I always attempted to stay motivated and inspired and tried my best in the tasks despite the challenges.

Do you have any advice for those thinking about applying for a WISS scholarship?

I would like to tell those thinking about applying for a WISS scholarship to try their best to complete any tasks given to the best of their ability. Also, try to actively contribute to WISS services, such as participating in ASAs, competitions, and services like iShare, Gail, and Duke of Edinburgh. Most importantly, just try to enjoy yourself at WISS. If you are enjoying yourself at WISS, you will be motivated and inspired to join the services and programs of WISS.

What are your career aspirations?

I have learned numerous things throughout the years at WISS that interest me. However, unfortunately, I do not have a career aspiration yet. I believe that after or during the process of studying at WISS, I will eventually discover my career aspirations – what I am genuinely passionate about and what I’d love to do in the future.

What’re accomplishments you’re proud of?

There are countless accomplishments that I am proud of, such as completing the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, being able to swim and play piano at a successful level, and doing well in school that lead to me being able to receive the scholarship. I cannot choose just one accomplishment from these. They were all very impactful in leading me this far and shaping me this way.

I am Evan, a Grade 6 student at WISS. I was born in Los Angeles, CA, USA. I am the only child of the family. I like to play piano and have two classes at school that I like: math and science.

The process consisted of completing an application form and writing an essay. I received a reply that the Scholarship Team is reviewing my application. Then, after one or two weeks, I received a letter of “congratulations!”  and that I was successful in my application for an academic scholarship.

Do you have any advice for those thinking about applying for a WISS scholarship?

My advice is to work hard so that you can apply for more scholarships and to aid in opportunities for admission to prestigious universities when you graduate from school.

What’re accomplishments you’re proud of?

An accomplishment I am proud of is the Grade 5 Exhibition held at the end of Semester Two last year. It was a great learning experience.
