Terrence, Mavis, Rachel (Grade 10) and Brandon (Grade 5) came to WISS from Singapore via Switzerland.  Switzerland was their first experience in an IB school and have chosen WISS to continue their IB education. This year, Rachel will be finishing the MYP and Brandon, the PYP.


How many years has your family been a part of the WISS Community?

Tell us how you came to WISS. Where did you move from, did you live anywhere before that?

Introduced by a friend whose kids are in WISS. Moved to Shanghai from Switzerland and lived in Singapore before that.


Where were you born? What passport do you hold? Where would you call “home”?

Born in Singapore, Singapore passports. Home is Singapore.


Why did you choose WISS for your family?

Both Rachel and Brandon have been on the IB programme since their time in Switzerland. They enjoy the programme very much and it was natural to look for a good school with an IB programme when we moved to Shanghai.

In addition, Brandon also enjoys soccer, and he was very excited when he saw that WISS had a strong soccer programme. Rachel enjoys dancing, and is now a member of the WISS dancing troupe.


What do you like most about WISS? What makes WISS unique?

Brandon : It has a big play space, lots of football fields and I have lots of friends and a Café!

Rachel : The teachers and students are very understanding and supportive

WISS has plenty of sports facilities like the swimming pool, rock climbing wall and the 4 football fields, it also has a good music and art programme that the kids love. Rachel has had the opportunities to dance in HK Disneyland and at the Rolex Masters and she has been so proud about it. Brandon has taken up the drums, learnt how to swim, plays in the football team and has made so many friends. His confidence has also grown. All in all, the environment and teachers at WISS have been very inspirational to them.


Tell us a little bit about yourself. What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? What do you enjoy doing as a family? How do you create your family time in Shanghai?

Brandon: Video games, football, drums, science

Rachel: Dance, youtubing, baking, eating new foods

Mavis: Zumba, working out, shopping, travelling, experiencing different cuisines and cultures

As a family we like to travel and try different foods.


What is your favourite subject at WISS, and why?

Brandon: Chinese because all my friends are in it and the teacher is really fun.

Rachel: Dance, art


What do you think of life in Shanghai?

It’s very interesting and lively. Full of surprises and fast pace. The city has lots of activities for all ages.


How has living abroad, and in Shanghai, changed you?

Each place has its beauty and pros/cons. We take things less for granted and appreciate what each place has to offer. We also experience new cultures and learn how to live within them.
