Can you imagine 300 dancers gathered in one place sharing their passion? That’s exactly what happened when the Western International School of Shanghai hosted DanceFest 2019 and it was an enormous success! As an IB World School, WISS is very internationally-minded and that was more than apparent in the workshops featuring different kinds of dance from all over the world.
The aim of the DanceFest is to gather passionate dancers from all over Shanghai in the same place for them to learn new techniques through a variety of workshops. Then each dance company shows off their dancing skills during a final group performance.
Learning More About Dance and Movement
WISS recently hosted 300 students aged 8 to 12, from 8 different schools with a common slogan: Don´t stop dancing!
The day was full of activities from the early morning until the late afternoon. All the dancers were excited to discover the amazing experiences waiting for them. Aiming to teach that each dance is unique, DanceFest organized different workshops to bring to the students the opportunity to explore all aspects of movement.
Students learned from about Flamenco, contemporary dance, Zumba, parkour, Sevillanas, cheerleading, Capoeira, Hip-Hop and many more from expert dance instructors.
They also had time to relax during the Yoga Workshop helped the dancers stay calm despite all the excitement.
A total of 14 dance teams took to the stage to perform in the Grand Finale, showing off their moves in performances that showcased a variety of styles. Their passion was infectious and the audience in the packed Orsini Theatre clapped and tapped their feet to the rhythms!
The WISS Dance Company performed 3 dances. The WISS Mini’s danced to “All I Am” and proved that dance is for all ages. Tiny dancers with enormous talent and their enthusiasm shone brightly!
The WISS Junior Dancers routine to “Don´t Let Me Down” showcased their perfect coordination and what good teamwork is all about.
And the final WISS performance by the WISS Seniors, dancing to “Ride This Feeling”, left us speechless.
The Benefits of Dance
Dance is a great activity for students, as it not only helps them to keep physically active but also brings other benefits related to their mental, emotional, and personal development. Kids who dance have an active life and are able to keep a good posture and good coordination as well.
There is no doubt that dancing is one of the most beneficial activities to do after school. Dancing also helps students to socialize and teaches them about teamwork. Dancing is also a good way for kids to show off their talent which is really good for their self-confidence.
This is why we offer our students who want to improve their dancing skills and discover a new passion an opportunity to join the WISS Dance Company as part of our After School Activities at the beginning of each semester.
