Primary School Principal

Ms. Doreen Garrigan has been in the education field for 25 years, having worked in a variety of school settings and systems, utilizing a variety of instructional practices. Originally from the central coast of California, Doreen earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Fresno. She later completed a Master of Arts degree in Administrative Leadership from the George Washington University in Washington D.C. It is the IB philosophy and mission that Doreen strongly believes supports and inspires children to become lifelong learners. She has seen the results in her own child. Bringing with her an extensive background in curriculum design and instructional programming and practices for high ability students, Doreen is thrilled to be in the WISS community.

PYP Primary Deputy Principal

Lisa is from Wales and gained a B.Ed Primary (Honours) at the University of Gloucestershire. She began her teaching career in London and has since taught EAL learners in both Primary and Secondary schools in addition to College and University in the UK. Lisa enjoys travel and has previously taught in Japan and the Philippines. On returning to the UK, she worked as an Education Authority School Improvement Advisor for EAL. Missing Asia, she moved with her family to Shanghai in 2011 and was Head of EAL at an international school before joining WISS. Lisa is enthusiastic about teaching EAL within the PYP curriculum; encouraging and supporting the language acquisition of those children new to English within the WISS community.

Amy Kent is from the Hudson Valley of New York and received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education and Special Education grades 1-6 from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York. An educator since 2005 with and a strong PYP background, Amy enjoys being involved in the discoveries that children gain through their education. Amy believes as an international school it is our responsibility to create global citizens for the future. Part of that is having parents, teachers, and students work together; to foster a positive learning experience for everyone and give students the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Mr. Stacy Doyle is from Canada, but has spent the last eighteen years living abroad. Stacy has a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and taught English in South Korea for five years before moving to Australia to attain his Postgraduate Diploma of Education with his wife, Lana. He has worked for the past eight years in Australia teaching lower primary classes. His hobbies include rugby, scuba diving, and walking with his son, Cullen. They have walked over 2,500 kilometers since Cullen’s birth. Stacy strives to be a creator of a calm and compassionate classroom atmosphere, as he believes safety and a sense of community are paramount in learning for young students.

Ms. Miya is originally from Shanghai. She graduated from Donghua University with a major in English. She also holds a teaching degree from East China Normal University. She is a passionate teacher and enjoys working with young students. During her college life, she learned about language teaching and has put these skills to use as an individual English teacher and a volunteer teaching assistant in a summer school program. Ms. Miya is pleased to be a part of the WISS community.

Ms. Nirada is pleased to be a part of WISS community. She grew up in Chicago and received her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She began working in the design field before receiving an Elementary Credential with an endorsement in Special Education and Linguistically Diverse Education. She also received a Master’s in Educational Equity from University of Colorado at Boulder. She believes that embracing an individual’s differences is the key to understanding their thinking and how it influences their learning style. Her teaching philosophy is centered on the belief that meeting the needs of these students requires scaffolded learning which allows them to think critically, even if their expression of thoughts takes different forms.

Ms. Liandan, originally coming from Hubei Province, obtained her M.S. Ed. from The University of Edinburgh. Deeply influenced by her family, she loves to teach and work with children. Throughout university, she had different teaching experiences with children ranging from 6 to 18 years old. For her, a good teacher should be open-minded, patient, professional, and should inspire every student’s talents and help them grow up happy and fulfilled. During leisure time, she loves reading, travelling, singing, playing musical instruments, practicing calligraphy and volunteering in NGOs. Liandan is very excited and honored to be at WISS!

Monika is from West London in the United Kingdom where she was awarded her Bachelor of Education from Kingston University, London. She is an Early Years specialist who is passionate about sharing her knowledge and experience. She is keen to provide children with the confidence to enable them to be happy independent learners. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, travelling and cooking; always with the help of her son, so it can get very messy! Together, they are very excited to be a part of the WISS community.

Ms. Evelyn is excited to be a new member of the WISS family. She holds a BA in English and a Master of Education degree from the University of Sydney.

Evelyn has been working with children and teaching EAL for around ten years now. She enjoys inspiring children to explore new things and to find the answers for themselves. She believes children can achieve more when they are engaged in a caring and supportive learning environment. Outside the classroom, her hobbies include travelling, reading, jogging and practicing calligraphy. She is also a big fan of sports.

Allison is from Canada and has been teaching internationally since 2010, first in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and recently, in Wuxi, China. Allison has a Bachelor of Arts (History) and Bachelor of Education (Elementary Education). She loves learning about new places, people, and cultures and learning with her students each day. Allison also enjoys reading, being outside, swimming, trying to learn Mandarin, and exploring Shanghai.

Pamela is from Hong Kong and has been living in Beijing for the past ten years. She has a Bachelor’s degree and a Teacher Certificate in Education. She has been a full time teacher in Hong Kong for sixteen years. While living in Beijing, she worked as a part time relief teacher in an IB school. She trusts that all students have their strengths. Teachers are facilitators in helping them to develop the attitudes and skills for both academic and personal success. Her hobbies are hiking and cooking. She enjoys exploring new places and sharing good food with others.

Ms. Kira Botton loves being a part of the WISS family. She is from Louisiana and Colorado in the United States, and has taught in both South Korea and China as well. Kira has a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Northwestern State University and is currently working on her Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She enjoys discovering new things right along with the students as they make their own educational journeys. Kira’s hobbies include visiting new countries and beaches, book club, swimming, volleyball, and kayaking.

Lily graduated from Shanghai Normal University, with a bachelor degree in Chinese Language and Literature. As a previous cover teacher at WISS she discovered her passion for working with children.  Lily then joined  an NGO to serve migrant children in Shanghai as an early childhood development teacher and also worked at another international school in Shanghai.  Her fond memories of WISS, especially the children and teaching staff, brought her back to continue her professional growth at WISS. She thinks it is very important to guide children as an independent thinker and believes every child is special. Lily reads a lot in her spare time as she aspires to be a life-long learner.  She’s also a nature-lover. She likes traveling and sports like swimming, hiking , biking. She is hoping she could always keep the heart of a child, always having curiosity about the world around her.

Katie Richard was born and raised in Georgia, USA.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and certificate in Special Education from Kennesaw State University.  She began her teaching career in a culturally diverse urban school in Atlanta and has a passion for creating engaging lessons to reach all of her learners’ needs and interests.  When she isn’t hard at work teaching, Katie enjoys exploring the outdoors, running, soccer, and practicing yoga.

Originally from Shanghai, Ms. Wang received a MA in Curriculum and Instruction from University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA. She had an internship experience in one of the international schools in Shanghai and did her student teaching at a California state public school. During the days of her college life, she also had been an individual English teacher, assistant, and volunteer. She is passionate about the field of education and wishes to be a dedicated educator to inspire students.

Linnea McCully is originally from the Washington, DC area. She attended college in Minnesota, where she studied Elementary Education. She taught first grade in Cartagena, Colombia for two years before moving to China. Before joining WISS, Linnea taught the PYP curriculum at Rainbow Bridge here in Shanghai. Linnea enjoys teaching through inquiry, and she is excited to be teaching second grade at WISS.

Ms. Zheng graduated from Tianjin Normal University with a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. She has experience of teaching Chinese in both primary and secondary schools in Thailand and Scotland. It gives her a lot of pleasure to work with children.

Ms. Zheng believes that every child is unique and intelligent in different ways and has the ability to fulfill their dreams as long as they utilize their potential and believe in themselves. She would love to help them develop the skills and understandings they need for their futures.

Bethany Bollman

Mrs. Bethany Bollman is from the US but has also lived in Indonesia.  She has a degree in Elementary Education and additional ELL certification.  Bethany has been teaching since 2002 and has worked with children since 1994. Previous to teaching she worked in the business and sales sector.  She is married and has two sons, who are adults and live in the US.  Bethany enjoys cooking, cake decorating, and photography.  She likes traveling and meeting new people.  Bethany is happy to be part of the WISS community

Ms. Tian graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a major in English and received her teaching qualification for early years and primary school. Before coming to WISS, she worked as an English teacher in a bilingual school for 3 years. She enjoyed the time with children and was very proud of them when they made progress. She is very excited to become a member of our WISS family and she hopes to learn and share with her students and the wider WISS community. In her spare time she likes reading, drawing and handicrafts.

Ivette Mejia was born in Massachusetts, USA but has lived in different countries and various states including Florida where she attended the University of Florida. There she received a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Education with a focus in Special Education. Ivette lived and worked in the Dominican Republic for two years and is enjoying the opportunity to live in Shanghai and work at WISS. Ivette is passionate about teaching and does not take for granted the opportunity to guide and teach her students.

She originally come from the Lake District area in England and is the eldest of four children. She mainly grew up in Hannover, Germany. There she attended an international school, which sparked her interest in the variety of different cultures and countries that exist. She completed her BA in Primary School Teaching at the University of Cumbria in the UK. After which she headed back to Germany, where she taught at an international school. The next school she ended up in was a little further away and located on the hot, sunny island of Barbados! She spent three years on the wonderful island before moving to Shanghai. She is happy to be at WISS!

Nadya is originally from Mozambique but has lived in many different countries. She received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York and a Master’s in Education from Jones International University, in Colorado. Nadya is currently finalizing her second Master’s degree in Education – Elementary Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and pursuing an online graduate Certificate in Advanced IB Studies at George Mason University. Before WISS she worked in an IB world school in Tanzania as a primary class teacher for two years. Her two daughters are with her at WISS.

Miss Ashley Reinhardt is from Ontario, Canada and has a degree in Primary Education, a BA in Humanities and an Early Childhood Education diploma. Ever since Ashley was a child, teaching has been a lifelong goal. Ashley has been an international educator for the past six years and has enjoyed traveling the world with her partner Christopher Cotton. She has previously taught in England and in Kuwait. Outside the classroom, she enjoys traveling, theatre, fitness, and spending time with family. Ashley is pleased to be a part of the WISS community to learn and grow with her students and colleagues.

Ms. Claire Bojesen-Trepka is a trained educator who has most recently completed 3 and a half years of teaching in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. After graduating from the University of Waikato with a Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching, she began her career in Taupo before moving to Hawkes Bay where she taught until 2016. Claire has a passion for travel and cultures, and in her spare time, plays netball and tennis. Her biggest passion is teaching, and she is pleased to be a member of the WISS team and community.

Mr. Andre Denomme is from Canada, though he has been teaching abroad for the past several years in South Korea and Colombia. Andre has Bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and Education, and a Master’s in Education. Andre’s parents are both retired educators, and he is honored to be following in their footsteps. Andre’s teaching is centered around Growth Mindset and inspiring creative problem solving. Some of Andre’s personal interests are photography, yoga, and basketball.

Ms. Karri is from Canada but has spent the last 10 years teaching abroad.  She has lived in South Korea, Japan, Kuwait and now China. Most recently she was a grade 4 teacher at a PYP school in Kuwait.  During the summer she spends her time with her many nieces and nephews across Canada. Karri loves to travel and explore the world and taking pictures along the way.  Her favorite things to teach are Units of Inquiry because it is so much fun to discover the world with her students.

Ms. Li graduated from Zhejiang University with a Master’s degree in Human Geography and Education. Since she was a university student, she has taught many subjects including Chinese, English, Mathematics, Geography, Chemistry in both local and international school settings.  Ms. Li regards teaching as her lifelong career and brings her positive spirit to the classroom. Her hobbies include hiking, camping, running, as well as exploring the great outdoors. She relishes talks involving Chinese learning inquiry as well as Chinese culture, history and geography.

Reese Wang is originally from Jiangsu Province. She graduated from East China Normal University with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She obtained a certificate of accreditation in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. In 2007, Reese began her teaching career at international schools in Shanghai. . She is passionate about teaching and wishes to inspire children to seek a lifelong love of learning. In her spare time, she likes to travel and her sweet little son is her best joy.

Mr. Stephen Spoore is from Toronto, Canada but has lived and taught in South Korea and Russia.  Stephen has an Honours Bachelor degree from the University of Guelph and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Ottawa.  Stephen is committed to life-long learning and continues to pursue additional teaching qualifications, which has led him to complete the Special Education Specialist program in Ontario, Canada.  His hobbies include cooking, studying new languages, travelling and playing a variety of sports.  Stephen is passionate about inquiry-based learning and enjoys being part of a community of learners.

Originally from New Zealand, Lucy King studied at Victoria University of Wellington, completing a Bachelor’s degree in modern languages and literature followed by Graduate Diploma in Teaching. Lucy has enjoyed teaching students from a wide range of age levels over the past six years in New Zealand and abroad. While living and teaching in Quebec, Canada, she completed a Masters of Education in intercultural pedagogy. Lucy’s hobbies include reading, kickboxing, and exploring new places. She is delighted to lead a class of grade 5 learners as they explore the final stage of the Primary Years Program at WISS.

Mr. Michael Hurst-Mawasse (Mr. HM) is from the North East of England and has experience of working as a PYP and Secondary English & Social Studies Teacher in the UK, Dubai and Oman. Michael has a BA in English & Sociology; MA in International Relations; PGCE Primary & Middle School English and is currently undertaking a doctorate in Educational Research at the University of Bath.  His interests include playing a variety of instruments; reading fantasy & sci-fi; travelling; gardening; woodwork and electronics. He enjoys working with students in the PYP and helping them to realise that learning is a lifelong adventure. Michael and his wife Lina (IBDP Physics) are very happy to be a part of the WISS community.

Ms Ye graduated from Fudan University with a BA in English. She has worked as a Chinese teacher for over six years and gained a lot of experience in elementary education. Ms Ye has a passion of working with children. Her interests include arts and crafts.

After graduating from Shanghai Normal University, Carol Chen had her teaching experience in a local public school for 7 years and in an international school for 8 years. She has gained many teaching awards from the Chinese government and has become an experienced teacher, especially teaching Chinese. She likes reading and writing.  Carol also enjoys teaching children Chinese writing.

Mrs. Sharon Loper is from New Zealand.  She has twenty-six years teaching experience in a variety of classroom, specialist and management roles.  Sharon spent the last three years as a Grade 1 and EAL teacher in Qatar (Middle East).  She has a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Education and a Postgraduate diploma in Bilingual Education.  Sharon is reading recovery trained and has a passion for working with struggling emergent readers.   She joins the WISS community alongside her teaching husband Tahu (Early Years) and children Beth and Tiaki.  Her hobbies include reading and travel.

Mr. Pritchard received his Bachelor of Education (Honours) at Westhill College, Birmingham University. After three years of primary school teaching in the UK, Nigel headed overseas. During the six years previous to his tenure at WISS, he worked at two other international schools in China. Receiving ongoing PYP training, Nigel is excited by this opportunity to teach in the programme for which he feels a great affinity as a teacher.

Jose is from Spain. He has worked for 20 years in school counseling and special education in a variety of environments, from public and private schools in Spain to international schools in the Middle East.  Jose has a Master’s degree in Education and PhD in Social Psychology. He is married and has two sons at WISS. His love for falconry, as the bond of brotherhood between peoples and intangible heritage of humanity, led him to use falconry as an educational resource for students with socio-emotional problems.

Vanessa Avery is from Australia and brings almost two decades of classroom teaching and learning support experience to WISS. Vanessa has a Bachelor of Arts with Diploma of Education, Majoring in Special Education. Vanessa loves working with children and helping to unlock their creativity and potential. She loves creating supportive learning environments to encourage children to thrive and grow. Vanessa has worked across a variety of school settings, from remote Aboriginal communities to inner city Sydney. Her time at The Korowal School in the Blue Mountains developed her understanding and appreciation for the importance of educating the whole human being. Vanessa is joined by her three sons and husband.

Magnus Holmstrom

Magnus was born in Sweden, where he grew up participating in various competitive sports. His sports teaching career started over 20 years ago with coaching a variety of sports, following that he moved into outdoor ED facilitation and finally into teaching at schools. Magnus has taught in Sweden, Malaysia, Micronesia, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong. His education includes a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Health from Hong Kong University as well as other certifications.  Physical activity and an active lifestyle have always played a large part in his life and he enjoys participating in various sports.

After graduating from De Montfort University in 2007, Vicki started working as a freelance dance practitioner working for numerous companies in both educational and community settings. In 2011, she became a dance coach for a sports coaching company in Shanghai. She became a Learning Support Assistant and EAL Teacher at a large, private school in Shanghai. It was through her teaching practices that her passion for Primary PE became apparent.

Ms Lu is a former Olympic swimmer and has represented China at many international games around the world, including taking the silver medal at the Swimming World Cup. Ms Lu has been an educator, swimming teacher, and pool manager for 12 years and wants to use her expertise to help the young people at WISS to unlock their sporting potential.

Visual Arts Teacher Grade 1, Grade 3 and Grade 5

Cheilaugh Garvey is the Early Years Art Teacher at WISS. She grew up in Japan, Germany and Italy as well as in several states.  She graduated from Boston University in Massachusetts with a B.F.A. in Design and Photography and an M.A. in Arts Education from Columbia University in New York City. She has spent most of her teaching career in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, but most recently in Tunisia.  Having an eclectic past, she finds that teaching art is the best way to utilize all her skills and passions; from helping children to be self-sufficient, creative and cultivate their inner artist to facilitating exploration and discovery through art while watching her students take creative risks. Her very creative and talented son Cooper is also part of the WISS family.

Isha Joshi

Visual Arts Teacher Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 4

Isha Joshi is from India and was born and brought up in Delhi, India’s capital. She finished a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the College of Art at the University of Delhi. She also completed a course in textile designing for fashion. Isha has been teaching in IB PYP for 9 years and loves working with clay, experimenting with a variety of mediums with her students in the art room but what really thrills her is creating something out of pure waste! She loves illustrating her life experiences and the sights and sounds which surround her in the form of digital art. She believes that her students are a big source of inspiration for her work.  Collaborating with other team members to enrich the curriculum is her forte.

Adi Gafni

Music Teacher Grade 1 – Grade 3

Adi is an experienced Rhythm and Movement specialist and has been teaching music to young scholars since 2006. She started her musical career with 3 years of professional studies at the Rimon school of Jazz and contemporary music majoring in Vocals, following that with a BA (Hons) in musicology and teacher certification studies in Israel. Adi is finalizing her theses on Beethoven’s piano sonatas. She likes singing, swimming and Indian food. Her favorite phrase is “Music is what feelings sound like.

Mr. Nicolas Elguea is from Spain and has been passionate about music all his life. He obtained his music teaching degree in his home country, later moving to Chicago where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s in orchestral studies at the Chicago College of Performing Arts in the specialty of clarinet. He has extensive international experience performing in symphonic orchestras and bands touring in the US, Spain, France, Italy, and Japan. In 2010, he joined the British School of Navarra, Spain as a primary music teacher; this gave him a remarkable perspective in international education. Nicolas joined WISS in August 2012; he loves being involved in all musical projects supporting students all across school; encouraging young performers and instilling appreciation and love for music.

Annika Chen is a passionate educator from Shanghai, China. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language from East China Normal University and a Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the University of Edinburgh. She has over five years of experience in teaching both Chinese and English to a wide range of learners with different backgrounds. She enjoys working with children, and previously she has taught in an international school in Shanghai as well as a local primary school in the U.K.

Ms. Zhu has been working in International schools for since 2007. Her major is teaching Chinese as a second language and she loves working with young children; seeing them learn and grow. In her spare time she enjoys reading books, listening to the music, and travelling.

Ms. Wang graduated with a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a second language from Macau University of Science and Technology and a Bachelor’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Language from Inner Mongolia Normal University.  She has four years of experience teaching both English and Chinese in China and abroad. Previously she taught Chinese in an international school in Macau.  Ms.Wang loves children and always enjoy the time with her students. Since she graduated from university, she tried her best to accumulate skills in teaching from the schools in different countries. She focuses on integrating Chinese language teaching with Chinese culture.

Ms. Miao Xie received her Bachelor’s degree of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language from Shaanxi Normal University. She also holds a Master’s degree of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from Xiamen University. She has taught Mandarin Chinese in New Zealand and America, within different educational systems and to various age groups. She has worked as a Chinese teacher in an IB school in Shanghai for two years before joining WISS. She enjoys working with children and helping them reach their goals. She always puts students’ interest first and works hard to meet their needs. She is extremely excited to be teaching at WISS
