Being from Australia, my brother and I have never seen snow. We were very excited that our next family holiday was going to be in Japan-skiing! My heart was pumping with excitement and anticipation at the thought of seeing and playing in snow for the first time. My brother, Finn, was already planning his first snowball fight.

We went to the north island of Hokkaido. Seeing the white flakes falling from the sky was like a dream; they felt wet and cold when I caught them on my tongue. We stayed in a ski village called Niseko. I tried snowboarding and I didn’t like it as much as my brother who was busy doing 360s down the mountain. I loved skiing and took lessons there. My favorite instructor, Annie, took me up the quad lift to a high run and I managed to make it down without falling.

Next we went to Rusutsu Resort, a 45-minute bus drive from Niseko. I loved the wave pool that overlooked the ski fields; we went there often after a day spent skiing. My most exciting moment at the resort was when I did my first red run. I went on a gondola and came down the red run on the first snow of the morning.

One day, we went to a show with dancing dogs and one could even snowboard. The bike-riding dog was the funniest, though. Rusutsu was cool, a bit wacky, and a fun place for Finn and I.

Overall, I think it was one of my favorite holidays because I learned to ski, tried new foods, met new people and finally saw snow.
