WISS Unveils Exciting Plans for 2009

By WISS Admin | January 22, 2009

New-BuildingWestern International School of Shanghai is poised to begin a very exciting year in 2009. The school began this, its third year of existence, with 213 students and is projected to reach 240 by the end of this year. Though the school is predominantly English language and is a Candidate school for both the Primary Years and Middle Years Programs of the International Baccalaureate, Chinese language and Culture are an integral part of the daily life of the school, and bi- and tri-lingualism are carefully fostered. The school has native English speaking and native Chinese speaking teachers working as a team in every classroom from Nursery to Grade 5, and though the student population is approximately 37% European, 25% North American, 31% Asian, many of the students have already begun their mastery of a second or third language.  As such, the school each year has a marvelous show and celebration to say Xi Nian Kuai Le! This year there will be back to back shows from first the Kindergarten students and then the grade 1-9 students. Preparations of sets and costumes, songs, dances, dramas, martial arts and gymnastics are all underway. MYP Chinese Coordinator Li, Rong, who earned her MA in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language at ECNU states, “A lot of work goes into our Chinese New Year celebration each year, but students are extremely proud of the results. And this is a great way to ring in the Chinese New Year.”

On other fronts, construction continues on phase 2 of WISS, the first wing of which is already occupied by 130 students. Also completed and being used is the pool building which also houses two indoor activity rooms. The gym/theater is slated to be completed next by early March, and the remaining two wings and the science building will be completed by June 2009. Atop the science building will be a 130 m sustainable greenhouse for student experiments and organic farming projects. Primary Principal Meryl Siggs of Australia says that “the added space of the new facility has been an amazing boon to our growth, and we can’t wait to see the second phase completed.”
