WISS Goes Green on Earth Day

By WISS Admin | May 5, 2009

Our brand new, spacious gym/theatre with high ceilings has been put into use for a while, which optimizes sports facilities for Primary/Middle School students.

Last Wednesday, the gym/theater turned green as our dynamic Grade 2s hosted an Earth Day celebration by guiding the fellow students and staff members through their green agenda that pertains to their current Unit of Inquiry “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. The G2s channeled their environmental concerns through a well-compiled informative PowerPoint, which introduced the development of Earth Day and demonstrated their findings of sustainable living practices worldwide, such as eyeglass donation in America, garbage art in Armenia and a walk against throw away plastic bags in India. They also delved into how Chinese people reduce, reuse and recycle in their daily lives and highlighted a host of environmentally-friendly practices, such as placing rubbish bins on the street for decomposable and non-decomposable waste, the Chinese government’s crackdown on the use of plastic bags in supermarkets, people clearing out old clothes for needy people and a Tree-Planting Day campaign.

In earlier weeks, the little environmentalists in G2 visited classrooms and offices in both Kindergarten and Primary/Middle School buildings to investigate paper usage and recycling at WISS. They initiated a flurry of inquiries such as “Do you have a recycling bin in your office or home?”, “How much paper do you estimate is used in one week?”, “What do you recycle at home?”, “What do you do that is good for the environment?”, which prompted the community to ponder over healthier practices to minimize negative impact on the planet. Their data handling skills got reinforced in this process of collecting, organizing and converting statistics into bar charts.

Aside from the G2s’ endeavor, Henry Lo from G3 shared with the community some of his ideas on accelerating  recycling on campus after examining the deployment of garbage bins in class rooms, lunch rooms and offices and  how recycling has been undertaken on campus. Henry first approached Primary Principal Meryl Siggs with the simple wish to battle global warming. In consultation with Mrs. Siggs, he decided to found a recycling team to help promote responsible recycling habits. The team aims to gather various materials from recycling bins in classrooms, the cafeteria, and offices and to put the materials into larger bins for weekly pickup. Henry’s initiative found a legion of followers who would like to take actions in combating environmental deterioration. An important goal of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) is that students not only learn concepts and skills but also translate them in to beneficial action.

On the same day, the Girl Scouts at WISS also got in the swing of their celebration. Lead by our lovely mom volunteers, the Daisy troop planted the rose bushes in the atriums of the Kindergarten building while the Brownies planted roses around the big tree in front of the kindergarten building.
