The true purpose of school

By admin | August 21, 2008

Every student in the world should have a truly stimulating education. Every young person should be encouraged to wonder, construct meaning and live a thoughtful, ethical life.
Too many young people around the world are learning in a ‘sausage factory’ environment, where teachers are paid to repeat old scripts and even older data, preventing young people from enjoying their natural capacity for wonder and discovery.

Every young person should be excited about going to school - excited to share with parents and friends the amazing skills and capabilities they are developing, and the amazing thoughts occurring to them. Some people say education is simply meant to prepare the next generation’s workforce, but here at the Western International School of Shanghai, we also aim to prepare young people for lives of contribution and fulfillment.
This may be why interest in the International Baccalaureate is growing so rapidly in the Asia Pacific. This is also why we at the Western International School of Shanghai are aspiring to be a full IB school, encouraging genuine rigour, self reflectiveness, global thinking, risk taking, questioning, and authentic learning.
