On May 29 the Grade 3 classes hosted an Expo to celebrate our current Unit of Inquiry in the Primary Years Program (PYP), which captured the central
idea “People have developed ways for harnessing and using renewable and non-renewable resources”. The theme for our Expo was Energy and how it is harnessed. Each student was responsible for choosing an energy source, researching and reporting on how it is harnessed, and creating their own booth. In order to teach about energy students built and assembled their own models, created flow charts to show the journey of energy, and designed interesting ways of teaching about their topics.
The models that the students created were inventive and imaginative. Using models that the teachers designed we showed how you can design original models using everyday household items. Well, they ran with it! Students used recycled boxes, plastic and glass bottles, plastic spoons, parts of old toys, chopsticks, toothpicks and many other items. To spice up their presentations, some students devised interactive games to engage those visitors, such as maze, game board and spinner. The resourcefulness they demonstrated was incredible!
Many people joined us to learn more about energy sources. We had visits from the Grade 2 classes, the Grade 4 classes, many parents as well as some middle school students and other distinguished guests!
All the students did an amazing job and had a great time. We were very impressed with the knowledge they had and the way they presented to the many guests they met. It was an impressive display of our class investigations and all the hard work the students put into this Unit of Inquiry. A fun and educational time was had by all!
