Visual Arts

The Visual Arts at WISS is committed to bringing students the opportunity to experiment, explore and visually problem solve. Our curriculum is fully integrated with the PYP transdisciplinary themes, the MYP and DP programs as we assist students finding their own voice in self expression. We see art and art making as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement. Creativity is a basic human skill useful in all walks of life. Our art making is closely tied to appreciating historical and contemporary works to build an understanding of the effects of human creativity on individuals, society and the world.
Through the years at WISS students experience a myriad of different kinds of media and learn how to manipulate materials in meaningful ways. Students have two-dimensional experiences with oil pastels, charcoal, graphite pencils, collage, watercolor, acrylic, and and three dimensional experiences tempra painting. Three dimensional opportunities include, clay, constructions, papier mache, wire and plaster and assemblage. We have a kiln for ceramics and clay sculpture. Students have many opportunities to exhibit their work and participate in making the choices of how to present their art throughout the year.
We sponsor a whole school drawing week, "THE BIG DRAW", in conjunction with international schools around the world to bring the importance of drawing and art making to our community. WISS was the first school in Asia to participate in this event and it has now become an annual community experience with parents and friends coming together to draw.
As we say at WISS, "Come and make your mark with us!"

Sport

Physical Education is an integral part of student life at WISS, from Early Years to High School. Out on the field or in the gym, our students learn how to look after their bodies and keep fit. They also have to work in teams and learn how to cooperate with each other. P.E has become very important at WISS, the school has teams for football, rugby, basketball and swimming.
The school teams take part in regular games and meets all over Shanghai, to present them with more opportunities to compete and to put their training into practice.
In additional to the P.E. program, we have the Tigers. This is a more specialized focus for the athletes that want to compete and take part in additional training, which takes place before or after school depending on the sport. The Tigers take part in tournaments all over Shanghai in competitive tournaments.
WISS is also an active member of CISSA, which brings all the schools of Shanghai together to play sport in a non-competitive environment. Students of any age can take part, with no scores taken and no trophies given. This is to encourage the children to play simply for the enjoyment of the sport.

Music

Music is an integral part of student life at WISS, from Early Years to High School. In the classroom, our students learn to sing and play instruments in our general curriculum and in our Violin and Band Programme. They also learn to compose and study music from all around the world, from its early beginnings until the music of today. Music runs all the way through the PYP, MYP and DP and our young composers have had their work featured on the international stage as well as within our WISS Community.
There are school performances throughout the year when students take to the stage, during instrumental concerts, public performances, festivals and seasonal productions.
In additional to instrumental and musical theatre performance, singing is celebrated at WISS through the WISS Primary Choir and the WISS Community Choir which welcomes students from grades 4 to 12 and also adults in our community, including teachers and parents.
In addition to the Music curriculum, WISS offers an optional Instrumental programme that delivers professional one to one tuition on instruments such as the piano, violin, drums, guitar, woodwind, voice and music theory.
